Welcome to Beyond the Music, a new commentary on Jewish musicology, arts and culture.
This newsletter is about what lies beyond the music we hear. Our musical practices and preferences are more than simple matters of taste. They reveal a rich polyphony of psychological, political, social, and theological intuitions which animate our lives.
I hope that Beyond the Music will create meaningful conversation for anyone who thinks about music from a religious or philosophical perspective. And I also hope that it will contribute to the world of musicology, and all those who are trying to understand music across the human experience.
About Me
I’m writing this music-based commentary through the lens of my religious tradition - Judaism. This is based my experience as a congregational cantor in Jewish communities for almost two decades, as well as my academic work as a scholar currently writing a doctoral dissertation in Jewish Studies at Halle-Wittenberg University.
